Poipet, Cambodia
For more than 20 years, the Salesians of Don Bosco in Cambodia have supported vulnerable children and young people in the Bordertown of Poipet, through education, boarding schools, technical training and the Don Bosco Children’s Fund.
Many of the students come from poor rural families or have parents working in border industries and employment hubs between Cambodia and Thailand. Through our Don Bosco school, young people are given the opportunity to gain the skills needed for stable employment and a pathway out of poverty.
Today, however, many of these families are facing a new crisis.
The 2025 border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia resulted in the closure of border crossings, displacement of families and communities, and the return of many Cambodian workers who had relied on employment across the border in Thailand.
Salesian communities responded by providing emergency assistance, accompanying displaced families and supporting those affected by the disruption to their livelihoods.
In 2026, Poipet has seen the departure of many foreign businesses and workers from the area. Combined with the impact of the border conflict, this has significantly reduced work and income for local families. Many parents of our Don Bosco students are now struggling to provide for their families, putting education, nutrition and basic household needs at risk.
In response, the Salesians continue to provide education, boarding, meals, child protection programs and technical training, ensuring that vulnerable children and young people can remain in school and continue building a brighter future.
