PHILLIPINES – A place of hope in Pasil

Pasil – Cebu, Philippines

For almost 60 years, the Salesians have been a constant presence in Pasil, one of Cebu City’s most densely populated communities. Home to around 50,000 people, many families face challenges including poverty, limited employment opportunities and overcrowded living conditions.

Since arriving in 1967, the Salesians have worked alongside the local community, creating safe spaces where young people can learn, grow and build a better future. What began as a youth outreach program has grown into a parish, youth centre, skills training centre and community hub serving thousands of people each year.

COVID-19 set the centre back, and the Salesians have been working hard to rebuild their reach and impact ever since. Today, Don Bosco Pasil is focused on strengthening programs and expanding the support it can offer to vulnerable young people and families.

The centre provides vocational training in areas such as motorcycle repair, machining and dressmaking, helping young people develop practical skills that can lead to stable employment. Strong partnerships with local businesses also help connect students with industry opportunities and support the long-term sustainability of the centre.

The Salesians’ work extends beyond education. The site remains a gathering place for the community and includes a free medical and dental clinic that has supported local families for many years. While the clinic continues to operate, the team hopes to restore it to its full potential so more people can access much-needed healthcare.

Under the leadership of Br. Ves, plans are also underway to upgrade facilities, increase student enrolments and grow community programs. In a place where opportunities can be limited, Don Bosco Pasil continues to offer young people something invaluable: a chance to learn, thrive and build a brighter future.
