A Presence of Care and Hope in Venilale

In the hills of Venilale, Timor‑Leste, the FMA Sisters have become a much-loved and constant presence in the lives of families across the region. In a country where access to education and healthcare is limited, their work responds to everyday needs with compassion, skill, and a deep respect for human dignity.

Caring for the Most Vulnerable: Salesian Sisters Girls’ Orphanage

At the heart of the sisters’ mission is care for children who cannot remain with their families. Through their orphanage, children are provided with a safe and nurturing environment where they can grow, learn, and experience stability. Beyond meeting basic needs, the sisters foster a sense of belonging and routine that helps each child develop confidence and hope for the future.

Medical Care at the Heart of the Community – Auxiliadora Medical Clinic

The FMA Sisters’ Medical Clinic in Venilale provides essential healthcare to the eight villages of Venilale, with the sisters regularly travelling to an additional fourteen surrounding rural villages to reach those unable to access care.

With limited access to pharmacies and hospitals, the clinic is often the first point of care for families, particularly mothers and children. The Sisters offer basic treatment, health education, nutritional support, including baby boxes and powdered milk for vulnerable infants. The clinic remarkably remained open throughout the COVID‑19 pandemic and continues to be a trusted and reliable presence for those most in need.

Reflecting on the work of the clinic, Sr. Carolina says:

“We care in a holistic way through the support of donors, giving life to those who are sick. Your support is very much appreciated.”

Education for the Next Generation – St. Mary Mazzarello School

Education is the foundation of the sisters’ work in Venilale. Through their school, students receive a combination of general education and practical training in cooking, hospitality, tourism, and hotel management. Co‑curricular activities of music, choir, dance, theatre, and sport, support students personal development and confidence while building skills beyond the classroom.

An adjoining boarding house enables young people from remote areas to access education that would otherwise be out of reach. The close connection between the school and the Sisters’ guest house and café also provides handson hospitality training, helping students overcome barriers of distance and limited opportunity by equipping them with practical skills and confidence for independent life.

A Lasting Impact

The orphanage, medical clinic, and school, form a network of care that reaches across generations and extend beyond Venilale. The Sisters’ consistent presence has built trust within the community, offering not quick solutions, but patient accompaniment through daily challenges.

Salesian Missions Australia is proud to partner with the Salesian Sisters in Venilale in their vital work and is deeply grateful to the generous donors whose ongoing support makes this mission possible.
