Bringing Hope After the Earthquake

Salesians in Colombia have spent the weekend responding to communities devastated by the powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on Monday 10 August.

From the first hours of the emergency, Salesian communities mobilised to support affected families, assess urgent needs and coordinate relief efforts in some of the hardest-hit areas. Despite sustaining damage to their own schools, parishes and community centres, Salesians have been gathering donations, preparing emergency supplies and delivering essential assistance to families impacted by the disaster.

Relief efforts have focused on providing food, clean water, hygiene items, clothing and other basic necessities, while local teams continue to check on vulnerable children, young people and families. In many communities, Salesians are also offering pastoral care and accompaniment to those facing uncertainty, grief and loss.

Reflecting on the response, the Salesians in Colombia shared:

“In these difficult times, we want to be close to those who need us most. We want to accompany, listen, help, and remain united as a community so that children, young people, families, and all those connected to our works can continue moving forward. Today, more than ever, we are a community of solidarity.”

As communities begin the long road to recovery, you can help Salesians provide the support, care and hope needed to rebuild lives and strengthen communities.
