Following the devastating earthquake that struck western Colombia on 10 August, Salesian communities moved quickly to support families whose homes, livelihoods and access to essential services were disrupted. While emergency relief remains an ongoing priority, attention is now turning to the longer journey of recovery and rebuilding.
Through our Colombia Earthquake Appeal, we are supporting humanitarian assistance for affected families and helping communities recover in the months ahead.
At the heart of this effort is Casa Bosconia Buenaventura, a Don Bosco centre that has served children, young people, women and families affected by poverty, exclusion, violence and displacement since 1972. Through education, psychosocial support, literacy programs, vocational training and community outreach, Casa Bosconia has long provided a safe space where vulnerable people can access support and build brighter futures.
Despite suffering significant structural damage during the earthquake, Casa Bosconia remained a hub for humanitarian coordination. Working alongside government agencies, foundations, volunteers and community partners, the centre helped:
- Provide food assistance to more than 200 families affected by the earthquake.
- Support the distribution of over 9,000 daily meal rations across Buenaventura.
- Deliver hygiene kits, school supplies and other essential aid to vulnerable communities.
As the emergency response transitions into recovery, we are proud to support the restoration of Casa Bosconia, so that it can continue its vital work. This includes repairing earthquake-damaged facilities and restoring key community services.
